desert temperature range

Deserts that experience this climate are drier than those that lie within the hot desert climate. The temperature range in deserts are quite high because deserts are generally very cold at night and very hot in the day time. These deserts occur in moderately cool to warm areas such as the Nearctic and Neotropical realm. Furthermore, condensation of dew caused by night cooling may equal or exceed the rainfall received by some deserts. Most deserts have a considerable amount of specialized vegetation, as well as specialized vertebrate and invertebrate animals. In some plants, the surfaces are corrugated with longitudinal ridges and grooves. Soils are course-textured, shallow, rocky or gravely with good drainage and have no subsurface water. Nothing like the extremes of the Outback desert temperatures. They occur in the Antarctic, Greenland and the Nearctic realm. Some toads seal themselves in burrows with gelatinous secretions and remain inactive for eight or nine months until a heavy rain occurs. A good example is the Atacama of Chile. In some deserts such as Arica in Chile, the average annual rainfall is about 1 mm. The average rainfall measures 8-13 cm in many areas. Rainfall in American deserts is higher — almost 28 cm a year. Other animals include: insects, mammals (coyote and badger), amphibians (toads), birds (great horned owl, golden eagle and the bald eagle), and reptiles (lizards and snakes). There are two main variations of this climate, the hot desert climate and the cold desert climate. Summer heat is intense, reaching temperatures as high as 130 °F (55 °C) in places. In some areas, rainfall can be heavy in autumn. In the interior the heat is dry. Hot deserts temperature can raise up to 50 degrees Celsius but the average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius. Widely distributed animals are jack rabbits, kangaroo rats, kangaroo mice, pocket mice, grasshopper mice, and antelope ground squirrels. These climates usually feature hot, sometimes exceptionally hot, periods of the year. Minimum temperatures sometimes drop to -18 degrees Celsius. Ranges of 35 °C (63 °F) are not unknown when daytime maxima in excess of 40 °C (104 °F) are followed by a rapid nocturnal temperature drop brought about by the limited capacity of the dry, cloudless desert air to emit infrared radiation to the ground to offset radiation loss from the surface at night. Leaves are "replete" (fully supported with nutrients) with water-conserving characteristics. Temperature Range: 16° C Summer is scorchingly hot, with peaks of 50 °C (122 °F). Nothing like the extremes of the Outback desert temperatures. In the interior, the climate is desert, with virtually no rain; the temperatures increase gradually as you head south. The diurnal temperature range is remarkable because of both clear skies and low humidity. It has a fairly low salt concentration, compared to deserts which receive a lot of rain (acquiring higher salt concentrations as a result). As in the hot desert, rainfall is often very low and/or concentrated. However, we have a limited number of fossil exhibits on display, including a magnificent Tyrannosaurus rex . In some seasons the temperatures can reach 32º F at night. Evaporation rates regularly exceed rainfall rates. Nights are generally colder than days and during the coldest months of the year, night-time temperatures may drop to freezing point. The desert tortoise lives about 50 to 80 years; it grows slowly and generally has a low reproductive rate. The original biomes pages were created in fall 1996 by the Biomes Group, Biology 1B class, section 115, at UC Berkeley; all were reformatted, with many new photos added, in March, 2007. These animals include mammals such as the kangaroo rats, rabbits, and skunks; insects like grasshoppers and ants; reptiles are represented by lizards and snakes; and birds such as burrowing owls and the California thrasher.
